Finding Myself

On this street, walking home from school,
I found myself in what remained of the storm.

I gazed beyond the curb
to where the rainwater pooled,

entered a forest of leaves,
and leaning closer, saw my face

framed in dark branch
and glimpses of white sky,

rippling in a green place
that I knew even then

would be gone by afternoon.
